Advent worship stage lighting at Grace Community Church in Hudsonville, Michigan, featuring LED lighting, a black stage finish, and flexible color design for live services and livestream.

Client: Grace Community Church
Location: Hudsonville, MI
Project Type: Stage repaint, lighting upgrade, and screen format update
Timeline: 2 weeks (completed ahead of the Advent season)

The Challenge

Grace Community Church was working with an aging stage and lighting system built entirely around conventional dimmed fixtures. The lighting was dim, inconsistent, and overly warm, which negatively affected both the in-room experience and the livestream camera image. With no color-changing capability and limited control, volunteers had very few options to adapt lighting to different worship moments. Visually, the stage felt plain and dated, and the existing 4:3 screens no longer matched modern content or production standards.

The Goal

The church wanted a more modern and flexible worship environment—one that could set atmosphere appropriately for each song, improve on-camera skin tones, and give volunteers creative tools without becoming distracting. Flexibility, consistency, and a clean visual reset were the primary drivers.

The Solution

Enhance AVL designed and installed a complete stage lighting and visual refresh focused on output, flexibility, and simplicity.

Lighting & Control Upgrades

Stage & Visual Refresh

  • Repainted the stage from white to flat black, creating a clean, modern foundation that allows lighting to shape the space rather than compete with it
  • Replaced outdated 4:3 projection screens with 16:9 displays for modern content framing and improved visual consistency

Why These Choices Were Made

  • Fixture Selection: Chosen for the balance of cost, output, and versatility—allowing both subtle worship looks and more dynamic moments without excess
  • Black Stage Finish: A flat black surface minimizes visual distraction, enhances contrast, and gives lighting full control of the room’s mood
  • Design Philosophy: Every decision was made to support worship intentionally—creating atmosphere and clarity without drawing attention away from the message

Primary Constraint: Timeline. The entire project was completed within a firm two-week window leading into Advent.

The Results

  • Improved Visibility: Moving and repositionable fixtures allow the team to light whatever is happening on stage, even as band sizes and layouts change week to week
  • Modern Atmosphere: The room now feels current, intentional, and adaptable to the emotional flow of each song
  • Better Camera Image: Consistent color temperature and even key lighting dramatically improved livestream and recording quality
  • Volunteer Confidence: The tech team now has the tools to creatively support worship, not fight the limitations of outdated gear

Client Feedback:
“Exactly what we wanted—moving the church toward a more modern feel without being distracting or overdone.”
